Dominque Morriseau’s Sunset Baby

I think about those in the middle of revolutions. What about their families? What about the people who they are tasking to uphold? It’s a catch 22. You can be damned if you do and damned if you don’t. How can one fight for what’s right and be there for their own family? Can you win both battles? Who wins?

Sunset Baby is about a daughter and father caught up in lost times and even more distraught relationships. They say political activist are the backbone of the Black fight? Who’s backing them? Who’s helping to keep their families together. Even in today’s terms we see those like Shaun King and the same has to be asked! We see this tortured relationship between Nina and her father Kenyatta. Nina’s mother has written letters upon letters to her father who spent a large part of his and Nina’s life in jail.

Nina has had enough of her ghost of a dad. He wants these letters as token pieces of what he left behind but with Nina’s mom deceased will Nina see the value in him having them. It’s a lot to be said about the relationship between a daughter and father. They choose to pick the men in their lives who in some regards mirror their dad. I watched the way Nina and her boyfriend, Damon interact. How Nina kind of goes through the motions of love but is missing the essence. How much of a hustler Damon seems to be but he’s just as marred. This is why Damon and Kenyatta “see” each other.

Oh and the definition or should I say the evolution of “Sunset Baby!” Nina’s chasing something she believes she’s ever had but she’s had a taste. She wants her life to evolve in such a way that she doesn’t realize its not a small stretch from reality!

This was powerful. There are a LOT of imagery that I took in. I could really write whole essays on them. Just in Nina’s name alone is strength!! Sunset Baby is a must see not just because it’s the perfect backdrop of what many face during the end of the Black Revolution but because it’s a pure blueprint on what’s happening now-political unrest, mass incarceration, and families torn apart. There’s nothing new under the sun and Sunset Baby opens a conversation that we need desperately today!

Blogiversary Year 5

This entire month we are going to celebrate my Blogiversary! 5 years ago what started out as something to do has turned into a whole experience! I had a vision and that vision has shifted through the years but it hasn’t stopped!

When I first began it was just about doing it for the love of writing and more of a hobby. Now I blog full time while managing life be that from work, my family, and responsibilities. I’m projected to be full time blogger alone by 2020. That’s a huge ordeal for me and what I work towards daily. A lot of people see the finished project but have no idea the amount of time and dedication it takes. I am up all hours of my day and definitely at night editing and arranging content. When I first began I blogged in real time. I had no concept of editing and setting my blogs to release at certain days and times like I do now.

I have learned a lot from being consistent, dedication, and obtaining mentors along the way. It takes a village to go from to a once a week blogger to giving daily content! As ToiTimeblog has evolved and is evolving into a brand I am in awe. I treat every event I attend with the same dedication as the first. I do not take anything for granted. Every sponsored post, brand post, or hosted post are near and dear to my heart. I enjoy what I do and I know it has to come off in my posts! Any future ads that I do have to be a product that I have used or use currently that I stand behind. That’s the beauty of choice! I made the choices and call the shots on what I believe in. I’ve had some brands I’ve had to turn down! It’s apart of how this works!

I have to say that my followers and readers make it special. I recently went to an event where someone asked if it was okay to talk to me. I don’t care where I go and how ToiTime evolves I’m a small town girl in a big city and as long as you can deal with my quirkiness l’m just a normal young lady. For every woman I’ve interviewed as it’s my desire to make sure I uplift women even when negative decision making has taken place; I stand for us! I want to see us win every single time! I want to see us go from the bottom and rise to the top! I started out as a stay at home mom and have worked my way to a beautiful life of independence and I’m thriving. When I was told my kids were too young for me to do what I do I kept going. Now on kid appropriate blog adventures they go along. I want them to see how I move and for them to do the same in their own way! The way I carry myself now is completely different from the beginning because I have purpose. With that purpose I’ve gotten further in this blogging life than I could have imagined.

The amount of push back that comes from behind the scenes has made me stronger! It has also developed a new sense of advice for new bloggers:

  • Never work for numbers alone! I have walked in arenas that my dedication has opened doors quicker than my social media numbers have
  • Have a blog plan in place especially when dealing with brands. If I attend an event unless the client gives me a certain deadline I’m infamous for my less 24 hour turn around time
  • Don’t overbook events unless you can handle it. I get told I see you everywhere and it’s true but I go in fresh no matter what. Put space between events if you can to decompress
  • Know your audience and know your brand. Even if it’s a sponsored event or trip know the audience
  • Have a tight turn around time
  • Know the movers and shakers in the room. Don’t be shy networking is apart of this game
  • Be on time. Don’t come to events purposely late. If you can make your way to the front it will keep your focus and help smash anxiety
  • If you work with a PR get to know them and always be yourself. This has been a godsend for me. The one time I was super sick and the PR wanted to know what was up. Don’t lie be honest but always remain yourself
  • Blog what is natural for you. Do not try to mimic another blogger.
  • Your gift will make room for you. What others are doing with their blogs isn’t your business. Do what’s best for you at all times
  • Be professional even when you’re getting criticism. I attended an event and was told I didn’t look up to par. Instead of an attitude I took the advice and it’s help me to always represent my brand even when I’m not at an event

Now let me give you even more advice!! The best advice I can give: your blog is your vision and you can’t expect friends or family to have the same level of vision that you do. I see this from entrepreneurs all the time calling out their squad for not in the blogging world, reposting their blogs. You got to get thick skin. I am aligned with a lot of products, brands, and companies and I ask myself daily; am I promoting myself just as hard? People are fickle like water! You can’t expect them to help you brand years down the road! It’s not their vision. Take moments and time out to resonate within yourself daily, monthly, and yearly that your blog will look differently!

If you have a free domain when you start set a plan to pay for it the following year. You should be investing in your blog and brand consistently! I purchase new lighting, soon a new camera, upgraded my site, go on conferences, etc. because Toitime is worth it! You have to do the same! One thing we won’t change is unlike other blogs who only focus on pretty pics we will remain a staple to keep talking about life as it’s happening. No pretty picture will ever take from that. There’s a single mom who is at her wits end, a divorced woman who needs encouragement, or even a father trying to do his best! We are here for the everyday struggles.

Thank you to my support team. I am moving daily because I have support! Thank you to Aversa PR for seeing me and rocking with me! Thank you to my blogging friends who we collaborate with and engage in this world together without competing with one another. I love seeing them grow and glow and they do the same with me! Special thank you to Phillyfoodgal you have been a godsend. To my friends who don’t hesitate to be there for me-thanks! Thank you to TCP! I’ve been with you through name changes and rebranding but it’s been love all the way through!

To my husband and kids who have to deal with my fluctuating schedule-I love you! You make it easy for me to do what I love!

To my followers thank you! Every year I upbrand and this year is no different! You will be seeing changes to the blog at the beginning of 2020! I have more brands that I’ve secured and with that comes growth.

During this month of the Blogiversary follow me on Instagram! We have prizes and sponsored gifts coming to you for rocking it out with me. The only way to win is to follow me and the brand on Instagram. Let’s have some fun!! This month is going to be an amazing celebration!!!! Year 5 we about to do this!!

Diner En Blanc 2019

I have never been to Diner En Blanc. I was prepared to lug all of the fixings to enjoy this all white dinner and party. I was ready until Sofitel Philadelphia changed my life.

From talking to many past DEB (Diner En Blanc~ Philly) participants I did my due diligence to be sure that one I had my white. I had a heel and a sneaker or other type of flat shoe and that I came prepared for any and everything! However going the Sofitel Way has me spoiled. From the pre-party, DEB event, and after party hands down it was one of the most elegant events I’ve attended in such a long time. So let me break it down for you! Let me shout out my forever date for the evening; none other than my husband Marques!

Yes that’s him with none other Alex!!

Pre-Party

This was held at of course Sofitel Philadelphia! As an avid ToiTime reader you know any time I go to the Sofitel they are the leaders of the French Way when it comes to elegance and how they treat every last patron! From the doormen to the host and everyone in-between you are greeted! Every staff is hands on and it’s never an that’s not my job in how they take care of you! The pre-party was handled in the same elegant fashion. We were greeted with glasses of endless champagne and hors d’oeuvres! It was a great time to mingle and meet those who we would be sharing the evening with! I met so many new wonderful friends!

On our way

Now that the champagne was hitting it was time to meet our fearless table leader Kaye! She is one of the most energetic person I’ve ever met. She is a DEB enthusiast. She has been to a total of 53 DEB from all around the world. You can tell that she really enjoys what she does! She lead us on to our trolley ride to the location….Boat House Row!

The ride was amazing. We could see the event as we were on our way. Having more champagne to drink on the way was nice too! Two trolleys full of excited new friends made for such a suspenseful anticipation!! With it being my first I was well aware that most do not have wheels such as the trolley to get them to the announced location however when you go the Sofitel Way they make sure you are taken care of from the time you arrive until you depart!

Let’s Dine Together

Once at our location it was time to get seated and begin dinner. Let me just say that we were there before the sun went down and it was a spectacular view! Shout out to Feast your Eyes Catering for providing the most amazing meal! Also Chauteau Ste. Michelle Winery for such an amazing flow of wine! My favorite was the Rosé! Look at the views!

As it was time to eat the sun set and darkness came but it was beautiful amongst the candles and lighting!

Let’s Eat

No one could have possibly walked away hungry! But now it was time to continue mingling, dancing and of course party!

There was even an engagement at our Sofitel table! It was beautiful!

One of the best parts outside of the napkin wave is the sparklers! You will have to check out my Instagram for the live sparkler presentation!

It’s like the most elegant dinner and party that is filled with the most multicultural and beautiful souls you will ever encounter. Oh and Philadelphia is the largest in the country this year hitting 6000 patrons! That’s a lot of amazing people coming together in white to have a unique pop up dinner! The secrecy of the location always is one of the best part of the experience. I saw nothing but love! I loved the beautiful outfits and creativity!

Sofitel set the bar soooo high in elegance! They gave us an amazing experience but….it wasn’t over…….

After Party

We were treated to an amazing after party. Between more drinks, macaroons and an amazing DJ; the fun kept on going. Also it did rain but it didn’t phase us one bit! Sofitel provided us with wonderful white umbrellas in our swag bag!!!

So next time you see Sofitel advertise the experience don’t wait! The benefit of the Sofitel Way is transportation to and from event, provided food and drinks, pre set place settings, pre-party, and after party! With all of that you will never want to do DEB and other way! I know I won’t!!

Thanks to all who worked behind the scenes leading up to the DEB and after! I can’t imagine the logistics it takes to make this happen for so many people! Thank you to all staff at Sofitel Philadelphia and DEB international for this amazing time! Thank you Aversa PR! Thank you Kaye (Kayeskrew) for being an amazing leader! Good Luck on Saturday as you head to DC! Thank you to my new friends who made the time amazing! So many new faces and love given to all! Thanks to my husband for being my forever date! It takes a lot of manpower to go to a large event from outfits, sitter (shout out to Thalia and Tierra) Uber rides, and dealing with my stress before and during!

My first DEB was a complete and total success!! I saw so many friends and their pictures say the same thing; it’s a wonderful event and it’s truly an event to not be missed going forward!!

Piazaa Pod Park: Summer Oasis

Unless you’re a boring person you are going to absolutely love the new Piazza Pod Park. Between the more than 12 food and drink vendors, workout ventures, and regular entertainment; what’s not to love?

Also you have to come and meet BeBot a new 33 feet tall standing robot designed by Andrea Greenlees. BeBot is super amazing to behold by adults and kids alike.

Keep in mind the Piazza Pod Park is fenced in and my mommy brain loved that. I still wouldn’t let the kids roam too far from me but that gave me an extra confidence knowing that outside of time with friends, I would have them! Also for my nursing moms you don’t have to be uncomfortable either. There are nursing pods available! That’s a double win!! Nursing moms can now get out and enjoy some fresh air and fun too!

For the kids there is Tildies Toy Box. Tildies is a toy store located right inside so if you can’t load the kids on fun foods or water ice, you can grab them something to help calm them so you can continue your Summer fun!

As far as foods and drinks are concerned there should be no concern. There is something for everyone and I truly mean it! All of the Summer feels are included. I had some amazing vegan French toast bites by none other than Lokal Artisan Foods. You should already know they are hands down the only French toast bites I will eat. I smile every time I see them. They have vegan, regular, and they even serve them with bacon for those who want it. Oh and their lemonade is A1! Make sure you grab some!

So let me break down a few other vendors for you:

Empanada Box

Who doesn’t love an amazing empanada? You can now add them to your list of go tos while you’re at the Piazza Pod Park!

Check out the menu:

For your water ice needs and it will come from all of the heat, look no further than Mama Maria’s Italian Ice which serves some of your well known staples like cherry but pushed it up with the Philly Special!

For my island inspired eaters there is Tiki Tako! They have some of the most amazing drinks including their pineapple drinks straight from fresh pineapples! Their tacos, take a look for yourself:

My sister enjoyed this chicken taco

For bagels and sandwiches there is Spread Bagelry. Amazing selections and the hummus du jour definitely stood out to me! Since Piazza is open at 7am daily this could be your new breakfast or anytime spot!

And then there was a Lil Sum Sum where you can enjoy a matcha smoothie or chicken Siu Mai! They have an assortment of Dim Sum even some for the vegetarians!

So wait no drinks? Come on now!! I tried to give you the food options so you could then walk like a boss to some amazing drink specials!!

Let’s start with Craft Cocktail and Craft Beer Concepts by Blume. Blume is the new spot that I attended with the Butterfly on the windows! They have expanded and now have two spots at the Piazza Pod Park! So the Craft Cocktails is where you can get your soon to be new favorites like the Slushey Jawn or the new infamous adult sippy bags!

Convenient to hold, walk, and sip but takes you back to being a kid with a much better upgrade

I love wine! I also love an amazing frosé. What’s better than both options on tap to walk around and have in the Summer?! Thanks to Urban Village Brewing they have a friend in me. I stopped by them twice! The frosé was purely good and the customer service was over amazing! When you see people enjoying what they love it shows. Do not just stop by, go twice!

Now for those who have friends or family who are like my husband in the sense that he dislikes sitting outside eating and drinking there is an air conditioning pod that allows you to sit and drink and be comfortable! So not even he can make an excuse not to go. Oh and there is complimentary parking too. So what’s the excuse?! There is none and can’t be none!!

Round out your time and be sure to stop at Essen Bakery! Between sweet treats and an amazing cold brew you will not be disappointed!!

I know what you’re thinking? This sounds too good to be true?! However it is real and it opens this Saturday in Northern Liberties!

Here are the offerings for the public opening this Saturday:

It opens at 7am their normal hours but the grand opening activities won’t start until 10am! Fit Academy will have work out demos from 11am-2pm! 11am-4pm will be a bounce house for the kids-prime time to tire the little ones out. City Rhythm will provide live entertainment from noon-4pm! There will be local DJs from 4-8! Let me take the moment to shout out DJ Jason Weiss who played every song I had not heard in some time! It helped me move between eateries and I had an amazing time!

Also for those who want to bring their pups, there is an adjacent dog park and plenty of cool water for them as well! Just make sure they have leashes and be courteous to other dogs and dog parents alike!

The Piazza Pod Park is located at 1075 Germantown Avenue!

Philly Beer Week

So I had the opportunity to go to 2300 Arena for the Philly Beer Week kick off. There were hundreds of vendors on tap as we literally went from booth to booth trying out the newest and latest in tastings. Let’s just say it was an unforgettable night!

Philly Beer Week is 10 days that ends on June 9, 2019. During this week vendors will have special events, brews and fun. To get a list of events go to Philly Loves Beer

This way you don’t miss out on the opportunity to connect with other amazing beer lovers or grab a few friends and have an amazing start to your Summer plans! Even if you’re not a real beer drinker I found that most to have flavors that will make you reconsider. It’s an all around fun time for everyone!

Shout out to 2300 Arena as it was my first time here. It spacious and has plenty of amazing areas to hang out and drink. I definitely will be back with some of my friends as they travel into the city! Even with all of the vendors, people, mummers band, and DJ not one time did I feel cramped! Space to have fun while I drink is love!

I want to shout out a few of my favorite spots so you too can visit them and try out their beer too!

Hokkaido Brewing

So I loved loved their offerings! One they had fruit flavors that were amazing. The two I personally tried twice were the peach and lemon! I can’t find the words to describe the beautiful flavors. It gave me enough beer with that fruity taste that had my husband and I coming back! They are high on my list for a double back! You can visit them on their page;Hokkaido Brewing

Also Hokkaido will be having a Japanese night in Uptown on June 6, 2019!

River Horse Brewing

I loved their watermelon flavoring that wasn’t as fruity as Hokkaido but it was still super refreshing and they use fresh watermelon which makes it a great Summer drink. You may also catch them at the Philadelphia Zoo Watering Hole which is the zoo’s wine and beer garden. You may see them distributed throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey or elect to come take a 30 minute beer tour by going to their website for all of your questions, River Horse

Roy Pitz

I loved the names of these next beers; step your game up and and honey sucker. When you attend events the ones who catch my attention are the ones who you can see their passion in what they are offering. Roy Pitz is that spot! Step your game up as aromas of peach, strawberry, and mango and it wasn’t over powering or strong. Check out Roy Pitz as they also have happy hours in the city!

Imprint Brewing Company

Impressive, energetic and fun is how I would describe my time at their tasting. My husband had their bourbon vanilla was amazing. It was strong and it didn’t hold back on the bourbon. It was the mix of two worlds and I loved it. They got me all the way together with Schmoojee Raspberry Mango Lime. It was one of the most invigorating flavors I’ve had. I will be looking for them while I’m out and about! Go to their site so you don’t miss their events; Imprint Brewing

Fat Heads Brewery

Hail to the Fat Head! Among their flavor choices was the Bean Me Up! It was like a coffee Lovers Dream! Amazing robust coffee flavor with beer and the whole time I’m drinking I’m thinking why didn’t someone start this sooner. Beer and coffee is a great idea. To get yours or to find where you can get some go to their site, Fat Heads Brewery

Evil Genius Beer

Although there was nothing evil about their beer the taste was amazing. During the event they were located outside which was great having them right in the middle! I enjoyed their flavors. I had their raspberry shandy; You’re Killing me Smalls which was light and smooth!

They also had Lab Exclusive! I would highly suggest you trying them! They also have several events in Philly that you’re not going to want to miss! Catch them on their site; Evil Genius Beers

Shout out to VJ Fava Le Chic who was amazing and played an incredible mix!

Tinsel Philly: Happy Hour Meets Christmas

So if you love Christmas and you love drinks and getting out this is your bar. This pop-up Christmas bar is the envy of anything holiday that I have attended. Tinsel Philly Pop-Up bar is your go to. What is Tinsel and how should you prepare? Bring some friends, be ready to drink, bring a fun attitude and leave the decorations, great fun and awesome Christmas atmosphere to Tinsel.

tinsel.jpg

First of all you are going to want to be in the holiday spirit from the door until it’s time to leave. From the window display to the bathroom, there is no corner or ceiling that is left unturned. I loved it.  The ceiling even has real drop down presents.

It is an eye pop of happiness. If you had the unique opportunity to attend last year, you will be pleasantly surprised to find that its bigger and better. It features a 33 foot bar. Say it with me, dranks!   I was impressed. Being a lifestyle blogger I feel as if it is my job to be able to bring anything that makes your life fun, easier, and gets you out and about and this had all of that. I am going to start from the front of the venue to the back.

IMG-2911

I found super convenient street parking. I only had to walk less than one block away. This was not a turn off for me. Tinsel is not hard to find. Once you are on the block it literally sets itself apart from all of the other venues around it. It’s the most lit Christmas display and that itself reassured me I was in the right place. Once inside, I walked into an overhead of lights. Lights engage me. Once inside, the 33 foot bar is undeniable. The bar was absolutely wonderful. Now I am going to keep it real. Bars sometimes for me can intimidate me, but not at Tinsel. The staff was warm and welcoming and let me know their favorites off the bat. Now I had my sight set on the Tinsel Snow Globe. It is a keepsake.  Let me say the inner child kicked in as I shook my globe and enjoyed the tastings of Grey Goose La Vanile, White Cranberry and the best part edible snow. Yes, you read that correctly, edible snow. The slew of drinks that Tinsel has to offer has something for everyone. From cold Christmas drinks and specials to hot drinks and wines and beers, you are sure to be pleased. I was super happy not just with the themed drinks having great names but making sure it didn’t lack in quality. At Tinsel, that is not the case. You know I love to be on point and if I am spending my coins, I want my drinks to be worth it. You will find my personal stamp of approval. I love adult juice so when I am out and about I want to be able to get out and know that I am getting what I paid for.  Knowing that last year’s Tinsel Philly was packed nightly I can definitely see why.

IMG-2906

So let’s hit you with the Logistics:

Where is Tinsel Located:

116 S. 12th Street, Philadelphia PA, 19107

What drinks Does Tinsel offer?

Like I stated above there is something for everyone. The coveted Take Home souvenir drinks include the Tinsel Globe, Canned “Good” which is what it sounds like, a canned good can that is filled with your choice of either Deep Eddy’s Vodka or Bacardi Cuatro, Cranberry or Cinnamon (proceeds benefit MANNA) and Makers Mark Stocking Shot or the Neat X-Mas Ornament. I personally tried the Tinsel Globe, the Canned “Good” and the Makers Mark Stocking and they all were worth their price because one the bartenders were awesome and they didn’t short change me on the liquor.

IMG-2884

Tinsel Philly is donating $1.00 for every “Canned Good” drink to Manna who prepare and deliver meals to those are in need and are battling sickness and would otherwise not be able to have nutritional meals. Learn more about MANNA.

They have cold and warm drinks like the Hot Toddy, and the spiked hot chocolate that was made with either Stillhouse Mint Cocoa or the Bacardi Coconut. Absolutely everything that the holidays drinks  are about.

There is also an assortment of holiday beers, wines and what we all need to know about the happy hour which is Monday-Friday from 5-6 pm with $2 off most drinks.

Letters to Santa

This year Tinsel will have brand new post cards to the first 500 patrons. Tinsel staff will take these postcards that can be sent to Santa, or to spread holiday cheer to others. Staff will take these cards and mail them off for you!

Santa’s Throne

This was one of my favorite spots. It was a great place for that coveted Instagram pic! I had to make sure I got one! The room attached to the Santa Throne was well decorated and completely inviting. So make sure you bring someone who can get that great shot and angles for you. Definitely well worth it!

The intrict detail in all of the artwork was mesmerizing and appreciated.

And as always thank you Kory Aversa and Aversa PR for having me.
