2019 23rd Street Armory Oktoberfest

Oh what a night?! Oktoberfest is exactly what you would expect…food, fun, culture and beer! 23rd Street Armory has to be the biggest one I’ve attended so far.

I love the layout. You walk in and it’s fully decorated and organized. You know where the beer and food is, there’s plenty of seats, great service, and music playing!

So yes the crowds are big. Let me say they have enough people not to feel too crazy but enough that you can’t help but be friends with whom you are seated. I walked around the entire space and everyone was pleasant. I like to think it had to do with me but let’s go with the fact that it had to do with the atmosphere!

The open space is just what you need to navigate. Tickets for the event is $25. That’s not a bad starting price. I would suggest you get VIP so that you have food and your first beer included along with VIP seating. Oh and you get served. Now you don’t have to get up and get your food. You can have it brought to you!

Also because drinking and driving don’t mix consider getting the Uber VIP! Now you can have the same amenities as the regular VIP but with secured ride home. Trust me the size of these beers for even one drink will let you know that Uber or a responsible ride is where you want to be.

It’s a full on celebration with tradition food in tow! From the amazing pretzels, to the pork, sauerkraut, and to the roasted chicken you’re not going to want to miss!

You can follow me on Instagram to see some amazing performances or on my Facebook page! I loved it!

Shout out to Nick! Nick celebrated his 21st birthday! I don’t know of a better place than to celebrate drinking beer!

Now did I enjoy myself? Absolutely! I love beer and all things Oktoberfest that’s why I’ve been making my rounds!

I want to leave you with the link so you can get in the building and have a great time!

Tonight (Saturday October 19) it’s from 1-5 and then again from 7:30-11:30! Make your way and get your tickets here!! Trust me the tickets sell out fast! It’s always a hit so get them as early as you can!

2019 2nd Street Festival Preview

Nothing is better in the Summer than an amazing street festival. It brings everyone together for music, food, drinks, and entertainment! If all of that and more sounds like more your lines of fun, don’t miss the 2nd Street Fest THIS Sunday August 4th in Northern Liberties!

I attended the preview and let me be the first to say that the food and drinks are a hit! Oh and if our crowd of reviewers had this much fun on a Monday I can only imagine the amount of fun you will have on Sunday Funday! The Street Fest is rain or shine but it looks like we will have more shine than rain come Sunday so lather up in some sun block, grab your shades, and some comfy shoes and have a ball!

El Camino Real

We tried several dishes that will be available this Sunday! If you love tater tots than you will be smiling from ear to ear! I felt like a big kid! Also make sure you visit El Camino Real they have inside and outside seating and the staff are super engaging! Try them at the Street Fest than come back for a sit down meal!

Nacho Libre

This tater tot is full of flavor! It has queso sauce, lettuce, jalapeno, and crema! Even with the queso it doesn’t take away from the crunch of a great tater tots! These easy to carry will have you come back for more!

Walker Texas Ranger

These tots come with a big punch of flavor! Served with jalapeno, onion, queso, and pulled pork! I mean it’s like a street fest faborire!

Pina-Rita

Drinks are super important! Finding ones that are super refreshing as well as amazing won’t be hard! The Pina-Rita has tequila, triple Sec, lemon, like, and pineapple puree! It’s an amazing blend and the taste is exactly what you will need to make any heat bearable! During the 2nd Street Fest you will be able to have your drinks served inside of fresh pineapple!

Peach Bourbon Zombie

This is a great mix of rum, passion fruit puree, grenadine, and lemon-lime! It has the perfect amount of sweetness and it’s refreshingly cool!

Urban Village

I was first introduced to them by way of the Piazza Pod Park! I’ve had their amazing beer so I know on Sunday if there is a beer drinker amongst you they will not be disappointed! Urban Village will be offering these following options:

Don’t be fooled the sweet corn definitely adds amazing flavor! The garlic is definitely an added bonus. Served in a convenient container-you will be able to enjoy with one hand and have a beer in the other!

The peach jalapeno sauce is what turns an ordinary corned beef sandwich into next level! If you’re like me and wonder if the bread gets soggy the answer is no! The sandwich withstood the test but didn’t slack on the juicyness!

I’ve never had a chubbie! However I will be back for more! Anything deep fried is always a great idea for a festival and Urban Village came with the goods! This is a must! From first bite to last is like a bite in Heaven!

Who doesn’t love an amazing French fry?! I definitely do and these easy to grab and eat fries paired with the manchego cheese are like an upgraded fry experience! No lie save room!

What says Summer like watermelon? Watermelon is one of the fruits that is found in plenty during the Summer. Watermelon has the ability to quench the tbirsr but paired with your favorite alcohol it pops even more!

Words that come to mind when this drink-light, refreshing and just enough watermelon not to be overwhelming! This is your go to for someone who may not be the big beer drinker but wants to have that hint of beer!

Add that spicy ring of goodness and this drink will be ideal for some who likes a hint of spice and sweet! Served cold will keep you coming back!

You are reading it right! It’s the 2nd Street Fest beer! It has an amazing citrus taste that keeps you cool and indulges your taste buds to euphoria!

Jerry’s Bar

From the door I loved the way this bar was set up! Jerry’s Bar is also known to have an amazing brunch on Saturday and Sundays! Here is what you can expect at the 2nd Street Fest!

This hamburger patty has that homemade taste and flare accompanied with farm fresh cheddar pickle, and caramelized onions; it’s a must try! This is like a walking barbeque! The bread is also what makes it taste that much better!

This is a bourbon watermelon smash! I loved it! I actually had two they were that good! It had more of the watermelon flavor and mixed to perfection! I could taste a little of the watermelon texture and I enjoyed that part!

Cantina Dos Segundos

They had me at tacos! Tacos might be my favorite second food to eat! They make me happy! Holding onto them and eating them makes me dance! If you love pulled pork you will fall over in flavor of the pulled pork tacos! Bursting in flavor and taste these tacos will make you wonder why you hadn’t visited Cantina earlier!

Keeping with the watermelon theme (not all vendors will be watermelon flavored) these margaritas were a smash!! How could you not like tacos and margaritas on a Sunday?! I could eat tacos daily!

The highlight was the sweet corn! I’ve from Lancaster and living here in Philadelphia not many can provide a fresh corn that is great all except Cantina Dos Segundas! I started out with one and tip toed back for another piece! My picture doesn’t even do it justice!

Heritage

I want to go back and hear more music and enjoy an amazing evening! Until then I’ll catch them at the 2nd Street Fest! We tried the Makers Mark Mule. Makers Mark is already a favorite in my home and the mule wasn’t a disappointment! You can check my Instagram for the amazing sounds!! I loved how engaging the staff was! From the door to the bar to the band everyone was extremely amazing and that sets the bar high!. Thank you Heritage Philly!

North Bowl

I loved walking into their gates! I also loved the outdoor bar as well! Anything outdoors with drinks is what we all look forward to when Summer comes! North Bowl didn’t disappoint! We were all having an amazing time and then bam-tacos appeared! You already know how I feel about tacos and thus my happy dance appeared! I really should get it on camera!

They were phenomenal! Fish tacos with flavor is all anyone can ask! Also the margaritas were a hit! Our bartender was amazing as well! If you ever get a chance to go to North Bowl do so! If you want to bowl great but if not sit outside at outside bar and enjoy your night. You can even play Cornhole! Fenced in greatness with amazing tacos and margaritas you are in for a treat come Sunday!

If that isn’t enough look at these tater tots:

Our last stop of the evening goes to:

Standard Tap

There’s nothing standard here! It’s spacious with seating upstairs as well! They also are known for farm fresh food. I love that and will frequent back to try dinner!

For Sunday try their Smoked Tofu Cuban! It’s made with Tofu, Swiss, dill pickles, cilantro, and mustard on ciabatta bread! If you haven’t guessed it I have an issue with wet bread! I don’t like it. So I always check the bread and do my personal wet bread test it double passed! It’s crunch from the first bite alone was amazing! The Swiss although I don’t eat cheese was just enough of a hint to add flavor but not take over the sandwich! This Smoked Tofu Cuban gets my thumbs up!

Now let’s get to the drinks:

They have a wide selection that will make your Sunday Funday even better! You can take your pick at the 2nd Street Fest! I enjoyed the watermelon punch! If you love a light fresh taste this is your go to! The cucumber, watermelon, lemonade and gin is the perfect Summer drink!

So you will have options! There’s expected to be over 200 vendors, crafts, entertainment including stilt walkers, live bands and DJs at the 11th annual 2nd Street Fest! Oh the Fest is free and you pay as you eat and drink! It’s going to be super big and amazing fun! Grab your family and friends and expect greatness! All of the vendors are working overtime to bring you the goods and the preview revealed you have nothing to worry! Bring the smiles and they got the covered on the rest!

Piazaa Pod Park: Summer Oasis

Unless you’re a boring person you are going to absolutely love the new Piazza Pod Park. Between the more than 12 food and drink vendors, workout ventures, and regular entertainment; what’s not to love?

Also you have to come and meet BeBot a new 33 feet tall standing robot designed by Andrea Greenlees. BeBot is super amazing to behold by adults and kids alike.

Keep in mind the Piazza Pod Park is fenced in and my mommy brain loved that. I still wouldn’t let the kids roam too far from me but that gave me an extra confidence knowing that outside of time with friends, I would have them! Also for my nursing moms you don’t have to be uncomfortable either. There are nursing pods available! That’s a double win!! Nursing moms can now get out and enjoy some fresh air and fun too!

For the kids there is Tildies Toy Box. Tildies is a toy store located right inside so if you can’t load the kids on fun foods or water ice, you can grab them something to help calm them so you can continue your Summer fun!

As far as foods and drinks are concerned there should be no concern. There is something for everyone and I truly mean it! All of the Summer feels are included. I had some amazing vegan French toast bites by none other than Lokal Artisan Foods. You should already know they are hands down the only French toast bites I will eat. I smile every time I see them. They have vegan, regular, and they even serve them with bacon for those who want it. Oh and their lemonade is A1! Make sure you grab some!

So let me break down a few other vendors for you:

Empanada Box

Who doesn’t love an amazing empanada? You can now add them to your list of go tos while you’re at the Piazza Pod Park!

Check out the menu:

For your water ice needs and it will come from all of the heat, look no further than Mama Maria’s Italian Ice which serves some of your well known staples like cherry but pushed it up with the Philly Special!

For my island inspired eaters there is Tiki Tako! They have some of the most amazing drinks including their pineapple drinks straight from fresh pineapples! Their tacos, take a look for yourself:

My sister enjoyed this chicken taco

For bagels and sandwiches there is Spread Bagelry. Amazing selections and the hummus du jour definitely stood out to me! Since Piazza is open at 7am daily this could be your new breakfast or anytime spot!

And then there was a Lil Sum Sum where you can enjoy a matcha smoothie or chicken Siu Mai! They have an assortment of Dim Sum even some for the vegetarians!

So wait no drinks? Come on now!! I tried to give you the food options so you could then walk like a boss to some amazing drink specials!!

Let’s start with Craft Cocktail and Craft Beer Concepts by Blume. Blume is the new spot that I attended with the Butterfly on the windows! They have expanded and now have two spots at the Piazza Pod Park! So the Craft Cocktails is where you can get your soon to be new favorites like the Slushey Jawn or the new infamous adult sippy bags!

Convenient to hold, walk, and sip but takes you back to being a kid with a much better upgrade

I love wine! I also love an amazing frosé. What’s better than both options on tap to walk around and have in the Summer?! Thanks to Urban Village Brewing they have a friend in me. I stopped by them twice! The frosé was purely good and the customer service was over amazing! When you see people enjoying what they love it shows. Do not just stop by, go twice!

Now for those who have friends or family who are like my husband in the sense that he dislikes sitting outside eating and drinking there is an air conditioning pod that allows you to sit and drink and be comfortable! So not even he can make an excuse not to go. Oh and there is complimentary parking too. So what’s the excuse?! There is none and can’t be none!!

Round out your time and be sure to stop at Essen Bakery! Between sweet treats and an amazing cold brew you will not be disappointed!!

I know what you’re thinking? This sounds too good to be true?! However it is real and it opens this Saturday in Northern Liberties!

Here are the offerings for the public opening this Saturday:

It opens at 7am their normal hours but the grand opening activities won’t start until 10am! Fit Academy will have work out demos from 11am-2pm! 11am-4pm will be a bounce house for the kids-prime time to tire the little ones out. City Rhythm will provide live entertainment from noon-4pm! There will be local DJs from 4-8! Let me take the moment to shout out DJ Jason Weiss who played every song I had not heard in some time! It helped me move between eateries and I had an amazing time!

Also for those who want to bring their pups, there is an adjacent dog park and plenty of cool water for them as well! Just make sure they have leashes and be courteous to other dogs and dog parents alike!

The Piazza Pod Park is located at 1075 Germantown Avenue!

Almanac Dance Circus Theatre Presents: Communitas 5 Years Later

Vibrant. Witty. Funny. Strong. Impulsive. Intimate. Artistic. These are just some of the words that describe the show Communitas 5 Years Later production. Communitas is a mediation between individual and collective human structure. It was silent.  It was loud. It was everything that I didn’t know that I needed to be a part of. It was full of joy.

If you don’t gasp in the first 5 minutes you can’t possibly be human. Its that intriguing and that enlightening.

4 actors coming together and blending immense skills set that are out of this world was mere mesmerizing to say the least.  Let me say the acrobatic skills were on point. There were no ropes to break their fall. They literally put a lot of practice into trusting one another.  You can see the pure joy on their faces as they went from one piece to another. Its not everyday you see a beautiful blend of acting, acrobats, and perfect timing into one production. I was in the front row and I felt every pressure of making sure that they were safely making their marks while enjoying what they were able to do on a stage. I had not seen anything like that in Philadelphia or beyond.

How can you come together like Communitas for this production?

You have 3 chances to see it:

Friday May 24 @730pm at Funicular Station

Saturday May 25 @730pm Funicular Station

Sunday May 26 @8pm at Penn Treaty Park This will be a special treat as the actors will teach you how to do some of their skilled acrobats.  You will want to bring a picnic and maybe a bottle of wine and enjoy this interactive learning experience and show.

Also if you say well its the holiday weekend my plans are already set there are other works coming up for you to see:

xoxo MoonGirl which deals with women and domestic violence is a must see. It will be a one woman show featuring Nicole Burgio. She also expressed to me that this is a show that she wants to inspire women so ladies lets get out. Also if you live in the Germantown area, please familiarize yourself with productions in your area. A lot of these productions can be discounted for Germantown area residents. Take advantage.  Sometimes we say that the Arts died, but the reality is they haven’t, participation has declined. Let’s expose ourselves to the Arts and encourage our loved ones to do the same. As always you can donate to Almanac Dance Circus Theatre, here.

Curio Theatre Company Presents: The Winter’s Tale

Where do I start? I had the most magical time at this production. I love everything about a Bohemian garden and what’s better than a Bohemian garden?  A Bohemian beer garden and taking my love of all things Shakespeare to another level.  That’s right it was like getting a two for one in fun and theatre at the same time.

I am so grateful for being exposed to Shakespeare in High School. It really changed my outlook in plays and poetry. When you combine it and have an outstanding production like Curio Theatre has, it was amazing. Every last actor, played their part. They really played them well. I was in the front row where I love to be and the action captured me. I left the theatre unable to go to sleep.

actors

I laughed so hard even though a Winter’s Tale is about Leontes, King of Sicillia gets into a jealous rage thinking that his friend, Polixenes had an affair with his pregnant wife, Queen Hermione. If you never read this Shakespeare classic I won’t spoil it but it includes a lot of turns of events that feature violence, death, betrayal, and forgiveness. It’s true what they say about jealousy, it is a killer. What we think when we don’t control our thoughts turns into negativity and can hurt the ones we love! Nonetheless the pure emotion that each actor gave was amazing. Each actor captured their roles and even if you cant get past the Middle English of the time, if you listen with intent, they played their part enough for you to modernize it and understand it beautifully.

Taking the production from inside and then outside to the Bohemian Beer Garden was the best surprise I didn’t even know I needed. The air was crisp, the wine was sweet and the actors continued to stay in their parts while we enjoyed the best acting intermission I had ever been too. Curio Theatre, this had to be the best part of my night. I had the most magical time. Everyone who attended smiled from ear to ear the entire time. It was a pleasant experience and if they ever have another production, I want to be in the seat.

garden

You only have 2 days to catch this treat. That’s right make your Friday night magical by getting tickets for the 8pm show or tomorrow’s final night at 8 as well. You can get your tickets here. One thing that Curio Theatre does is that when you get your tickets they encourage their new ticket initiative and that’s with Curiositix.  This is a new initiative that allows those who would have not been able to see amazing theatre and make it affordable. When you order your ticket at the time of ordering you can select how much you want to give toward the ticket. You can also even pay for your another ticket so that someone who can’t afford it can.  This is making sure that everyone has the opportunity to get that amazing exposure to theatre.  Also if you want to just donate, you can do that here as well.  No donate is too small.

I would recommend this production for over 15 years of age due to scenes of violence against women and adult themes.

Follow Curio Theatre on their social media channels so you don’t ever miss another production.  Who knows you may see me in the audience real soon:

Philly Zoo: WildWorks something to flip about…

I had an amazing time at the Philadelphia Zoo! I know I’m like a resident there, but today I zip lined at WildWorks, an interactive aerial adventure for all ages.

Yes from the little kids to the big kids aka adults, not one of us left with sad faces. 34 feet off the ground of pure exhilaration is what I experienced. If you have been following the blog you know that Philadelphia Zoo has had major change ups offering more than just cute animals in their habitats but a whole shake up of encouraging patrons to be fit all the way around.

From the new eateries such as the Urban Green to WildWorks, the Philadelphia Zoo keeps everyone towards a healthy lifestyle while you learn about the animals. In alignment with a fit lifestyle, Independence Blue Cross has partnered to bring WildWorks to life. I had the honor among other media outlets to attend the grand opening of the interactive aerial exhibit.

Dan Hilferty, CEO of Independence Blue Cross

The aerial interactive park, is a great time and will get you and the kids moving and excited. All we heard from everyone is squeals of laugher! You can visit the zoo, eat great food with amazing choices, walk and get your steps and have fun with family and friends and now with WildWorks you can experience an aerial play park that is nothing you have ever seen. It makes your zoo trip that much more meaningful and definitely an upgrade from your past zoo experience.

Ribbon cutting ceremony

WildWorks is available as a separate ticket. Zoo admission is not required. Pricing for the 20-25 minute activity ranges from $4.00 to $10.00. The Zoo is also offering an unlimited attractions pass per day for $18.00 to $20.00 each. For more information, pricing and tickets, visit, WildWorks

Preview of “Boycott Esther” by Emily Acker

Boycott Esther is the production for anyone who has any online social media account. Directed by Maura Krause, it’s a play for anyone who wants to be relevant in any way and use social media to do so. It’s the manual for influencers. The safety protocol of thinking before you hit send is key. Thinking and pausing which so many regret to do in order to be relevant and in the know, could come at a cost. This play is about how your social media stamp can have a dynamic impact on your real life persona and vice versa.

Acker was hired by the Weinstein Company in 2016 to do a pilot remake of a British sitcom they own the rights to. As the project was wrapping up and to be sold, the allegations came out and the Me Too movement was born. Her project, as well as others, were then cancelled or didn’t move forward due to what was happening with the larger company. Acker was left to balance her personal disappointment vs. feelings of solidarity with the movement and empathy toward the women speaking out. It’s also about looking into the #MeToo movement and other social movements and the use of social media to take a stand or to evoke harsh and real realities onto others. Words matter. How we utilize our words especially on difficult topics matter too. Feeling strongly about an issue and having a set of core beliefs matter, just ask Esther. Will we be boycotting Esther?

What would you do if you were Esther? You’re young and tech savvy and you get your first major break? Before the ink could dry on your contract you’re being hit with major accusations of your boss/idol. Would you support the person you knew just because the allegations didn’t define who you perceived your boss to be? Do you stand and hold to your core values? Also what about those accused? It’s certainly taboo to think that someone can recover from such atrocities.

Boycott Esther is going to make you reconsider having to speak loudly on social media without consideration of what the boldness of your voice could cost. You are going to get the flip side of the accused. Is their empathy for them? Can you humanize with each side? Boycott Esther is the must see and to be honest it’s a piece that needs to be shown even to high school age kids too. It’s about teaching others the consequences of our social media lives.

Also did you know that Azuka Theatre follows a pay what you decide format? This makes seeing this production and many others like this affordable. With that being said if you believe in the arts you also can choose to donate. There are some amazing hard working artist and your generous support means everything!

Boycott Esther is funny, timely, thought provoking and should be a crash course for all social media handlers!!

Thank you to the staff of Azuka Theatre, the playwright Emily Acker, Director Maura Krause, the Cast of Boycott Esther, and Aversa PR for an amazing night. I had a great time with great hospitality. I definitely encourage all of my followers to see this play as all great things come to an End and your last time to see this will be May 19, 2019!! Don’t delay as you will never forget this amazing play-trust me!
